Rugby 7’s Langford 2016
Photos from the Women’s World Rugby 7’s in Langford, B.C., Canada on April 17, 2016.
I wanted to use the opportunity to practice a couple of things before shooting the event at the upcoming Olympic games in Rio. The first was to test a 2x extender on a 600mm lens in case their is not an opportunity to switch end zones in Rio and Canada ends up making a play at the opposite end. I worry a little bit about the sharpness and noise shooting at f/8 but it was sharp and their was enough light to warrant bringing it. The second was to see if shooting while laying on my stomach as heat waves rose from the rubber field made for an interesting shot or if they rose so high into the players faces. I was pleased with the result as the players looked like they were floating as the waves stopped at about their hips.
Having photographed this event last year I wanted to get a shot of the players leaving the tunnel before running onto the field. I was positioned with France behind Canada and all I was seeing was backs of heads. I kept the camera up hoping someone would turn and look and it was a nice touch that it was Canadian captain Jen Kish.
