Jack Walker opened the game’s scoring in the first period and Ryan Peckford added the game winner only 1:16 later burying a loose puck laying in the crease. Carter Folk closed out the period’s scoring finding a loose puck sitting between the Winterhawks goaltender Cole Kehler pads.
Matthew Phillips extended his point scoring streak to seven games, recording 14 points (6g-8a), Regan Nagy has points in four straight games and Jack Walker has eight points in his last five games.
Vladimir Bobylev played in his first game since returning from Moscow Spartak of the pro KHL.
“He balanced our attack and gave us size up the middle,” said Royals coach Dave Lowry.
Griffen Outhouse stopped 32 of the 33 for the Royals while Portland’s Cole Kehler got off to a shaky start letting in 3 goals in the first eventually stopping 29 of the Royals’34 shots.
The Royals will play Portland again tonight at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
