Victoria Royals (7) Vancouver Giants (1)- Sep 22nd, 2017

The Victoria Royals opened their 2017-18 Regular Season with a 7-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants on Friday September 22nd at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, B.C. Canada. Calgary Flames draft pick Matthew Phillips did not disappoint as he recorded four points (3g-1a) on his Bobblehead Night.

It was my first time shooting shooting hockey since last season ended with the 5 overtime games versus the Everett Silvertips

I shot the PGA Champions Tour the week prior and six days of golf put in in pretty good shape heading into the game as my timing and focus were still fresh.

I wear a 1980’s style Jofa helmet while shooting between the benches because with a very limited amount of padding it in thin enough that the pocket wizard that sticks up from the top of the camera does not hit it and block my eye from touching the view finder.  During a stoppage in play Ty Ronning learned over the bench to ask me were I got it and at the end of the second period the referee made a joke to Royals Assistant coach Doug Bodger that I was wearing his old helmet.

It was fun to be back at the rink for the start of a new season and imagining new angles and positions to make the same action on the ice look different. Sometimes that means buying new lenses and finding new places to put them and sometime that means getting a little icy post game and laying flat on the ice to get the fans and the first star of the game in the same frame.
