Victoria Royals vs Calgary Hitmen
The Calgary Hitmen are in Victoria this weekend to play the Royals who recently made numerous trades at the deadline solidifying their push toward the playoffs. I chose to shoot this game with a 24mm f/1.4 on one camera and a 85mm f/1.2 on the other which is different that the usual longer zoom lenses I would use to photograph sports such as hockey. With the 85mm getting peak action was more challenging than shooting with a longer lens but it made think differently and look for moments in places I normally wouldn’t see.
My inspiration for trying something different came from Ben Lowy’s recent Olympic posts on instgram. Ben spoke at the News Photographers Association of Canada Conference in 2015 where he shared great insights and thoughts on photography and I have been following and learning from him ever since.
His website and social media accounts are definitely worth a look and a follow.
